Thought Piece 8: Shitty First Drafts by Anne Lamott

Anne, I believe, wrote this article very well, I enjoyed reading it a lot. She kept it mostly casual and made her point very clear, to me at least, by not lecturing us but more like giving us advice, writer to writer. I felt like she knew exactly what I go through some times. I liked how she dispelled the stereo types or thoughts people may have when they think of an author that lives off their writings. Also how she told us her feelings and procedures for writing. I like her perspective on the first draft also. It is an encouraging and uplifting way to start your train of thought. The idea of just writing whatever comes to mind in a draft then taking stuff out after is a new technique I would like to try.

I can relate to some of her problems such as getting the motivation to get started and how to start. I mainly make points or a web of the ideas I want to incorporate in the writing first then fill in the sentences as I read through them I always worry my writings won’t keep up with others or that I’m doing it wrong. She mentioned she had the same problem with her readers but I guess you can’t please everyone. She also said she had a problem with voices in her head over whelming her or that she makes up scenarios, like her example of running the red and if there is a cop what she would say, and I find when I am over stressed I do the same thing. I quiet them though by remembering that someone I know thinks I’m crazy when I do that. She related to me quite well in this writing and explained to me why it’s ok to not be perfect on my first try.
